Bowen’s Heart

This post is more about thoughts and prayers than monetary giving. For those of you who listen to Klove, you probably have already heard about little Bowen. The lead singer of the band, Sanctus Real, (Matt) and his wife (Sarah) gave birth to their little boy, Bowen, on September 10th, 2011. He was born with a heart problem called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He has gone through a surgery, placed on life support, placed on a CPAP, taken off life support, had his CPAP replaced with a small oxygen tube and is now doing better. He is still in intensive care so he needs all the thoughts and prayers that we can give him. As many of you know, things can change in an instant in the NICU.

This is not what I usually post about but what better to help those around us is there? Please be looking for these two girls. Their parents and grandparents have posted their stories on Facebook and I wanted to share it as well. Alea Zumwart (Red Hair) & Chelsey Pelkey

Chelsey was last seen at her job at Steak n Shake on friday night here in Joplin. Alea was last seen at 26th and Main also on friday night here in Joplin.

Chelsey’s Dad posted this with the picture- “If you have any information please call 417-483-5721. Please only call if you have information as not to tie up the phone. We need you prayer Warriors. God please bring our daughter home..” (Cody James)

Alea’s Grandmother posted this- “Both girls attend Joplin High School, they are in the same class, they were both last seen on Friday (9/10/10), they are both residents of Newton County, and they both have families who are worried sick about them. I will post an update if I receive one. I hope and pray that both of these girls return home safely.

Walk to Defeat ALS

My dad’s best friend fought a long hard fight against ALS and eventually lost. Everytime this event comes around I think of him. For those of you who are not familiar with ALS it is:

“a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. (Dictionary.com)” Otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The ALS association puts together these events every year all over the country to raise money to help find a cure. They listed the following paragraph for the reason they walk:

“The ALS Association is the only non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease on every front. By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure. Each year, the Walk to Defeat ALS^TM brings communities together in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Though we walk for various reasons, we are united in our quest to find a cure for ALS.”

If you would like to Join them in this fight, please register to walk on September 12th, 2010 at 2:00 pm. This event will take place at Cunningham Park in Joplin, MO.

Head for the Cure 2010

I have a dear friend from high school that is going through his fourth onset of brain cancer. He is a great guy and my prayers go out to him and his family. I was looking over his Facebook page and found that in Kansas City and Lawrence, KS they are having ”Head for the Cure” 5k walk/runs! I was trying to find another way to help out (in any little way that I could) and I think I found it. My husband and I are planning on going to the 5k in Lawrence. The 5k in Kansas City was this last weekend.

Lafayette House- Joplin, MO

Many of you know about this organization… but they can use our help.

Here is a little bit of history:

“Founded in 1978 by a group of concerned volunteers, Lafayette House began as a short-term option for women who needed a safe place to stay overnight to escape abuse.

Today, Lafayette House is a 55-bed sanctuary for women, children and families who are victims of domestic violence or who struggle with addiction.

Through our residential shelter facility in Joplin and outreach offices in Pineville and Neosho, Lafayette House offers a full scope of services to support women and their families. Domestic violence intervention, substance abuse treatment, children’s services, and child care are all available in a caring, nurturing environment.” (www.lafayettehouse.org)

If you visit their website above you can learn about the volunteer opportunites they have right now as well as how to donation supplies or make a monetary donation. Many of us have been either affected directly by abuse or know someone who has struggled through this type of situation and this organization is helping so many women in the area.

UPDATE! March of Dimes!

I received the numbers from Alicia Orr today!!!!! We did great! According to the email I received:

ALMOST $2,239 was raised online

OVER $11,000 was collected the day of the event

(In case your calculator isn’t handy that’s $13,239!!!!!!! )

When you add in our sponsors like General Mills, Freeman Hospital, Community Bank and Trust, Macy’s, Famous Footwear, and Rent a Center we are projecting a final number of $21,875.00!!!!

And you can still give. If this inspires you to give some of your hard-earned money to a child in need, PLEASE contact Alicia at 417.889.9397.
